I am so tired of being told to stop “acting black” but then being ridiculed for being “such a white boy” like what do those even mean? Dressing in non baggy clothes is something only white people do? Every black person uses slang and Jamaican patois? All white people are rich while all black people are lower middle class? Society wants me to do what exactly?
I can’t use the excuse I can’t afford it because it is assumed that I come from a perfect home with a nice mommy and a well off daddy? Cause I’m white?
"You shouldn’t talk like a Jamaican seeing as how you’re not black it’s offensive especially cause you’re Irish the whitest white" The number of Irish people in the Caribbean is insane, whole generations of my family are there. Bob Marley was half white for God’s sake. Tessane Chin is Chinese and Jamaican which surprise surprise is a reasonable amount of the population. My Irish catholic family were oppressed by the same White people as India, the west indies and multiple African countries. They built an empire upon the rubble of the cultures they destroyed and the people they oppressed. My culture is more similar to Jamaican than the rest of Europe. Do people think I try understand a completely different dialect than my own to impress them?
My slang helps me pick out the people in a crowd that I can relate to. I can convey a message to someone from across a room and need not worry about people knowing what I’m saying but this makes me sound uneducated and annoys people? What exactly is one doing when they speak to someone in a different language while with other people? Possibly trying to address someone privately. But this is okay because it’s their language. Well guess whose family were not allowed to learn their language. Why? Because other white people didn’t allow it.
My slang is my language.
My socio-economic background has nothing to do with my colour.
I wear what I like not what I think looks black or white.
If you told me I was acting hood I’d gladly agree but to attribute the qualities of someone described as “ghetto” to one race of people you’re generalizing. When you attribute class and wealth to one race you are still generalizing.
I am not an act.
I am who I am.
